A Verification of Benefits (VOB) Team Lead acts as the bridge between management and team members. They ensure that the team understands its goals, stays on schedule, and performs effectively. The team lead provides direction, motivates members, and ensures communication flows smoothly both up and down the organization. Typically oversees the process of verifying insurance coverage and benefits for patients, ensuring the accuracy and efficiency of these verifications. 

Seeking a motivated and experienced Team Lead to oversee a dynamic group of professionals and ensure that daily operations run efficiently. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, a collaborative mindset, and a passion for guiding teams toward achieving their goals.  Here are some common responsibilities for this role:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Guidance:

Training and Development

Train new team members on policies, procedures, SOP,  and tools, while providing ongoing coaching to improve performance.  

Stay current with industry trends, insurance policies, and regulations to ensure the team is well-informed and compliant.

Lead, mentor, and motivate a team of approximately 8 team members to meet performance and quality targets

Quality Assurance:

Monitor the accuracy of benefit verifications, ensuring compliance with insurance requirements and internal Standard Operating Procedures.

Coordinate the work of the VOB team, ensuring timely and accurate completion of benefit verifications.

Performance Monitoring

Set performance goals and reviews. 

Track metrics and document reports.

Provide feedback and identify areas for improvement or additional training.

Help plan workflows and deadlines.

Anticipate potential roadblocks and address them early.

  • Verify Patient Insurance:

Contact insurance companies via phone, online portals, or other methods to confirm insurance coverage.

Determine patient eligibility for services, coverage limits, co-pays, deductibles, and pre-authorization requirements.

Utilize portals ie: eVOB, Availity, Payer portals to cross check benefits and confirm accuracy of quoted benefits. 

Address any inconsistencies between online resources and Insurance company’s representatives

Documentation and Record Keeping:

Accurately document verified insurance benefits in the patient’s medical record or billing system.

Maintain records of communications with insurance providers for future reference and audits.

Communication with Providers and Insurers:  

Communicate any discrepancies or issues with insurance coverage to Managers, the Billing department, UR Department and healthcare providers.

Provide Zealie Customers with the patients with information about their financial responsibility based on insurance verification

  • Problem Resolution:

Address escalated issues including coverage disputes or incorrect benefit information to management 

Process Improvement

Identify opportunities to streamline verification processes, improving efficiency and reducing errors. Attend training or continuing education to maintain knowledge of industry standards.

Supervise Team Activities

Manage and coordinate the work of the VOB team, ensuring timely and accurate completion of benefit verifications.

Reporting:

Generate reports and analytics regarding the verification process, presenting findings to management.

Qualifications:

  • 3-5  years of experience in benefits, have a background in a supervisory, lead, or management role.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proven ability to motivate and inspire teams to achieve results.
  • Proficiency with productivity and collaboration tools (e.g., Google Workspace, Availity, Proofhub) 

Preferred Skills: 

  • Experience in Behavioral Health Insurance,  healthcare technology, customer service
  • Knowledge of performance metrics and reporting tools.
  • Conflict resolution and coaching experience.
